When Did History Begin?
When did history begin? It’s a simple question but one historians have avoided like the plague. Why? Because they see it as metaphysical, even, perhaps, theological? Yet many questions that once seemed metaphysical, including “when was the Universe created?”, have now yielded empirical, scientific answers. I will argue that the same may be true of questions about the origins of history. And I will argue that answers to these questions may have a profound impact on our understanding of the core questions of our discipline.
